Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Yes, we have a copy of the latest release. My wife, Nicole, is a fan of the Harry Potter series of books and had pre-ordered a copy online. We decided to pick it up at the midnight release at the local Borders.

Is there anything that creates buzz and excitement within a faith community like the release of the final Harry Potter created at midnight on July 21?

Have you read any of the books?
How did Nicole like it?

I think the Second Coming of Jesus might create a certain buzz and excitement….

Joseph – I have read the first 2.5 books. I hope to read them all through before seeing any additional movies – I saw the first one. Nicole is about 2/3 through and is liking it thus far.

Second coming – yeah, you hope that might create some buzz. Short of that however, I’m not sure what could match Potter-mania.

I really had not spent much time thinking about Harry Potter books or movies in a religious way … thought it was good that got children reading books again and the movies were really beautiful to watch. But, couple of weeks ago I was at a COR event and the guest speaker afterwards just went off on “poor” Harry. Saying these books were signs that the Book of Revelations was now being played out in our times — having people flock to bookstores, popularity, etc., was worshiping witchcraft, etc., etc. etc ………………. Obviously she was a gal where everything is very black/or/white ….. I really don’t feel this way about Harry Potter; but, really didn’t know how to respond. Do you or Nicole have any suggestions on how to respond (biblical) to someone that has such strong views about Harry being the start of the end?

Diane – I think that you are right. The books have been great to increase excitement about reading and although I have not seen the most recent movie they are well done.

The interpretation of the book of Revelation is an area of disagreement among Christians. People have thought that it is the end times at many different points in history. I think that it is more important to be concerned with one’s own life of holiness than interpreting the signs of the times.

A good resource for further information would be the sermon series on Revelation. You can find CD’s or DVD’s in The Well bookstore at Resurrection.
