Day 1 at the UMC General Conference was filled with reconnecting with friends and colleagues from across the connection. It’s inspiring to see people from all across the UMC, including the highest concentration of bishops, and to have opportunities to catch up with friends from near and far. I’ve connected with a variety of people I’ve known over the years, and it’s heartening to see the spirit of unity and shared purpose that permeates the gathering.
As a reserve delegate, I have the unique opportunity to observe, learn, and pray as the voting delegates engage in the important work of the General Conference. The voting on petitions related to organizing the rules has been encouraging, with approval margins around 90%. This impressive level of agreement gives me hope for the significant work ahead, as we seek to discern God’s will for the church.
As I look forward to Day 2, I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide the hearts and minds of all those gathered, granting wisdom, clarity, and unity as we worship together and engage in the important work of this General Conference. I am hopeful that the coming days will bring a deeper sense of unity and purpose as we move into the more significant discussions and decisions.
