This post is in response to the series from NPR, The Young and the Godly. From the website:
In a year-long series, NPR brings you the stories of young religious leaders as they begin their first year of ministry in an era of increasingly diverse religious beliefs. We’ll look at why they chose this often low-paying work. And we’ll ask, “What does the call of God sound like?”
Great final question. I would like to make an addition. I think that God’s call may be experienced in more ways than sound. Perhaps a more appropriate or inclusive question might be – What does God’s call look, feel, taste, smell, or sound like?
- What do you think?
- Have you experienced God’s call? If so, in what ways? If not, what do you think it might be like?

I think the most startling way God called to me was through a dream. I had heard about my mom reading a book discussing various ways God can communicate to us through dreams, and my first thought was “oh come on, that’s weird.” Soon afterwards, I had a spiritually powerful dream that I woke up from completely convinced it was from God. That experiece pretty much removed my pride when it came to limiting how God might choose to communicate to me.
I think He likes to use all kinds of ways. Words, pictures, music, “mental movies”, prophetic confirmation from multiple independant sources, and probably ways I don’t even know about. The important thing is to be open and hungry to hear God’s voice, yet discerning and grounded in the Word.
I love this topic!
Jared – Thanks for sharing your story. I agree – dreams can be a way that God can communicate with people. I have not experienced this as clearly myself. Good point – being open to receive from God is often an important part of the process. I have found times of intentional discernment to be the times when I believe I have most often received clear direction from God.
