On May 17, Sally Morgenthaler facilitated a conversation with some of the staff at Resurrection about what 21st century worship looks like. I have posted my notes in PDF formate here – Notes – Worship Roundtable. It was a good day to step back and reflect on what it means to gather in worship. With the constancy of planning and leading worship each week, it is sometimes hard for those involved in worship planning to take a step back to examine some bigger picture questions. Some of the questions that were asked…
- What is missional?
- What is relevant?
- What does the DNA / heritage of The United Methodist Church mean for the denomination moving forward?
- Has there been a change in culture over the past 5 years?
- If so, what impact has this change in culture had on worship at Resurrection?
- What does it mean to be a reflexive culture within the narrative of the Triune God?
- (In this case, reflexive culture refers to a culture where information and experience is not just received, but actively shaped by the participant.)
- What is at least one tangible way that we can respond to God in each service of worship?
- Are we inviting people into a product or are we inviting people into a process?
- Is there a place in the community where I am having a regular experience with people outside of the congregation?
- Are there third places on the campus where conversations could begin to take place?
Points 6-9 were specific challenges that Sally had for Resurrection.
- In what ways are these questions applicable in your setting?
- Any responses?

Gavin – It is a lot to unpack. I think that we will continue to see how some of these questions play out over the next few months here at Resurrection. I will try to continue to post updates on this subject.
