I recently posted about the the concept of narrative leadership – the interaction between individuals and the story that they find themselves in. I think that one concrete example of that is taking place within the United Methodist Church in Kansas.
In both the Kansas East and Kansas West Conferences there has been significant work around a vision and strateigc plans for the future. Both of the conferences were challenged by our Bishop Scott Jones to undertake a vision process guided by the following strategic questions
- How can we strengthen our existing congregations?
- How can we start more and stronger new congregations?
- How can we better serve ethnic minority persons in Kansas?
- How can we strengthen student ministries?
More information about this process for each of the conferences can be found here: West and East. Working to respond to these questions are helping to shape a new story for both of the conferences – from one of decline to one of hope for the future. I am excited by the way that these questions have led to continued conversation about the mission of the church and the impact that the United Methodists can make in Kansas for God’s Kingdom.
- Do you have any examples of narrative leadership to share?
- What is your response to these questions?
- Do you think that this process will be a catalyst for renewal in the United Methodist church in Kansas?

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for this well written post. Our stories shape our lives and we can create a better life through story. Narrative leadership is what the world needs now. The language has become too detatched and so have many people – through language. So this is a great initiative.
Regards, Limor.

Limor – Thank you for your thoughts and responses. Narrative leadership is a relatively new concept for me and I am excited about continuing to learn about and grow in this area.
