Poverty – Blog Action Day

I believe that abject poverty is a sin of the global economy and that there are implications for each of us. As a Christian and church leader, I believe that the discrepancy between the rich and the poor that exists globally is a serious issue that should be addressed by each faith community in some way. My suggestions for next steps:

  1. Educate yourself and others. Some good resources are – one.org and End Poverty 2015
  2. Tell others about what you have learned.
  3. Make a commitment to join an organization that is working to eliminate poverty.

I am proud to be a part of the United Methodist Church, which is taking on poverty as one of four areas of focus over the next several years. From the website:

Engaging in ministry with the poor. As an expression of our discipleship, United Methodists seek to alleviate conditions that undermine quality of life and limit the opportunity to flourish as we believe God intends for all. As with John Wesley, we seek to change conditions that are unjust, alienating and disempowering. We engage in ministry with the poor, and in this, we especially want to reach out to and protect children.

Take action.

Blog Action Day 2008

If you are a blogger, you should know about Blog Action Day 2008. From the website:

Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.

I am taking part this year on October 15 and hope to be more thoughtful than I was for this event last year.
