“”The Lord will fight for you. You just keep still.”” – Exodus 14:14 (CEB)
This may be the hardest sentence in the chapter, not because it asks so much but because it asks so little.
Most of us would rather carry something. Give us a problem and we want a task. Being told to keep still while someone else does the fighting leaves us holding nothing, and that can feel worse than the danger did. We would rather be exhausted than useless. Exhaustion at least feels like contributing something.
But look at what the verse takes for granted. There is a fight. It is real. And it is not yours. Keeping still is not pretending the danger away. It is admitting whose battle this actually is, and trusting it is in better hands than yours.
What are you struggling to stop managing?
God, I keep picking up what you already carry. Loosen my grip. Let me be still without calling it giving up. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
