“The good news is that God prepared a seat with your name on it, and it was never yours to earn or yours to lose.”

This is week one of The Good Life, four weeks in the Ten Commandments. Preached August 16, 2026, on Exodus 19:1-6 and 20:1-2, on the last Sunday before school starts and on UM Student Day. The sermon begins before the first commandment is ever spoken, at the foot of Sinai, where a nation of former slaves waits to hear what God will require and hears something else instead. The question underneath the morning is the one nobody outgrows: do I belong here?

In the manuscript below:

  • Where the word “if” actually falls in God’s covenant with Israel, and how much the order changes.

  • What a teacher moving desk to desk the morning before school, writing name cards, has to do with a doctrine John Wesley built a movement on.

  • Why “a kingdom of priests” is a job description rather than a compliment, and who it makes us responsible for.

  • The honest reason we guard our own seats, and what widens a welcome.
