Worship Elements — When Your Plan Falls Apart
John 20:19-31 (CEB) · Fresh Start: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn · Confirmation Sunday
These worship elements are an early draft being shared as a preview for the upcoming service. The final version used in worship may be adapted or revised. Pastors and worship leaders are welcome to use and adapt these for your own context.
Welcome
Have you ever had everything you believed in fall apart—and then discovered something even more real on the other side? Today we meet Thomas, who knows exactly what that feels like.
Welcome to worship at McPherson First United Methodist Church! I’m [NAME], and I’m delighted you’re here this morning.
At McPherson First, we aim to love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously. Whether you’ve been part of this congregation for decades or this is your very first Sunday, you belong here.
We grow as followers of Jesus through five practices: prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. You’ll hear each of these named as we worship together today.
If you’re new or looking for your next step, visit mcphersonfirst.org/next or download the Church Center app—you can check in, request prayer, find ways to serve, or give. You can also text CONNECT to 620-241-3626 to stay in the loop.
Call to Worship
I invite you to join in our responsive call to worship as you see the words on display.
Leader: We come with questions we cannot answer.
People: God meets us where we are.
Leader: We come with doubts we cannot silence.
People: Christ offers peace, not judgment.
Leader: We come with plans that have fallen apart.
People: The Spirit creates something new.
Leader: We come seeking a fresh start.
People: We worship the God who makes all things new.
Welcome Your Neighbor
Thomas missed the first encounter with the risen Jesus because he wasn’t there. But when he showed up the next week, everything changed. That’s the power of witness—being present and sharing what we’ve experienced. Who in your life might need an invitation to be here next Sunday? Who might be one conversation away from their own fresh start?
Please stand, welcome your neighbor, and then remain standing as we join together in song.
Opening Prayer
God of locked rooms and opened doors, we gather carrying our own fears and uncertainties. Some of us, like Thomas, struggle to believe what seems too good to be true. Some of us hide behind closed doors, unsure what comes next. Meet us here. Speak your peace into our anxious hearts. Show us your wounds that became our healing. Open us to the fresh start you offer today. Amen.
Invitation to Prayer and Pastoral Prayer
We’re about to enter a time of prayer together. Whether you’re here in person or joining us online, know that God hears every prayer—whether spoken aloud or kept quiet in your heart. During our prayer, there will be a couple of moments of silence. Use these pauses however feels right to you—perhaps to listen for God’s voice, to offer your own prayers, or simply to rest in God’s presence.
Prayers is one of the five membership promises, and you’re never alone in your prayer journey. You can submit prayer requests anytime by texting PRAY to 620-241-3626. If you’d like to join our prayer team and receive prayer prompts throughout the week, text PRAYERTEAM to that same number.
Will you pray with me?
God of locked rooms and opened doors, we come to you now with everything we carry—our hopes and our hesitations, our faith and our doubts.
[Brief pause to center]
We praise you for meeting us where we are. You came to frightened disciples hiding behind locked doors and spoke peace. You came to doubting Thomas and offered your wounds as invitation. You never give up on us, even when we struggle to believe.
We confess that we, like Thomas, sometimes demand proof before we trust. We hold back, protect ourselves, and refuse to believe what seems too good to be true. We let disappointment harden into cynicism, and fear into isolation.
[Moment of silent reflection]
We bring before you those whose plans have fallen apart—through job loss, illness, broken relationships, or shattered dreams. We lift our confirmands stepping into a new chapter of faith. We pray for our community, our nation, and our world—wherever people hide behind locked doors of fear.
We thank you for this community, for the gift of worship, and for the fresh starts you offer each day.
Gather all our prayers, spoken and silent, and hold them in your grace. We pray in Jesus’ name, joining our voices in the prayer he taught us:
Invitation to Give and Check-In
Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here. Look at my hands.” Jesus offered himself completely. Our practice of gifts invites us to offer ourselves—our resources, time, and talents—as a response to God’s generosity toward us.
If you give regularly, thank you for your faithful generosity. If you’re considering giving for the first time, we’re grateful you’d take that step with us. Give through the Church Center app, at mcphersonfirst.org/give, or in the offering plate.
We also practice presence—showing up for God and each other. Check in using the Church Center app, at mcphersonfirst.org/next, or sign the attendance pad in your pew.
Ushers, please come forward to receive this morning’s offering.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
We’ve offered our gifts and ourselves. Now we’re sent to practice service—to be God’s hands and feet in our community. Will you pray with me?
Generous God, take what we have offered and multiply it for your purposes. As Jesus showed Thomas his hands that served and healed, send us to serve our neighbors with that same love. Amen.
Benediction
Jesus spoke peace to fearful disciples and patient invitation to doubting Thomas. Go now to offer that same peace and patience to a world that needs fresh starts.
And may God who makes all things new, Christ who meets us in our doubt, and the Spirit who breathes courage into locked rooms, go with you. Amen.
