Where Hope Lives
1 Timothy 6:17 (CEB) · Passing the Flame
“Tell people who are rich at this time not to become egotistical and not to place their hope on their finances, which are uncertain. Instead, they need to hope in God, who richly provides everything for our enjoyment.” — 1 Timothy 6:17 (CEB)
Paul doesn’t say the rich should stop being rich. He says they should watch where they place their hope.
The phrase “finances, which are uncertain” is a quiet hinge. Anyone who has lived through a market drop or a medical diagnosis knows the ground under wealth can shift overnight. Paul doesn’t moralize. He diagnoses. Hope built on what can disappear will eventually disappoint.
Then comes the turn: “hope in God, who richly provides everything for our enjoyment.” God’s richness isn’t a contrast to ours. It’s the source of it. Whatever we have is a gift from a richer hand.
The question isn’t whether we have enough. The question is whether we’ve placed our hope on something that can hold us when everything else gives way.
What is your hope actually resting on today?
Steady our hope, God. Move it from what shifts under our feet to the love that never moves, so we rest in your provision instead of our own. Amen.
