When You Miss the Moment Everyone Else Had
John 20:24 · Fresh Start: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
“Thomas, the one called Didymus, one of the Twelve, wasn’t with the disciples when Jesus came.” — John 20:24 (CEB)
One sentence. That’s all John gives us. Thomas wasn’t there. No explanation, no excuse, no dramatic reason. He simply missed it.
We know what this feels like — arriving too late, being in the wrong place, hearing about the breakthrough secondhand. A friend’s life changed at the retreat you skipped. The conversation that shifted everything happened the one meeting you missed. Everyone else seems to share an experience you can’t access.
The sting isn’t just absence. It’s the fear that the moment was your only chance and you’ve already lost it. Thomas must have felt that — his friends glowing with something real while he stood outside it, wondering if the door had already closed.
This week, we’re sitting with Thomas in the waiting. If you’ve missed a moment that mattered, take heart: the story isn’t over yet. God doesn’t offer one chance and move on.
God, when we arrive late to what you’re doing, remind us that your timing is wider than our worry. You don’t give up on the ones who weren’t in the room. Amen.
