When Worship Language Becomes a Weapon
John 19:3 · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“Over and over they went up to him and said, ‘Greetings, king of the Jews!’ And they slapped him in the face.” — John 19:3 (CEB)
Mockery disguised as a greeting. The soldiers turned worship language into a weapon—repeating “king” until the word meant nothing but cruelty.
We know this pattern. We’ve watched words meant to honor get twisted into tools for diminishing someone. A compliment laced with sarcasm. A title used to belittle. “Oh, you think you’re so smart.” The words sound almost right, but the tone destroys them.
Jesus stood in silence while they emptied his title of meaning. Yet John’s Gospel insists: the mockery was accidentally true. He really was king—and no amount of slapping could change that. What words have you heard twisted to harm someone? What would it look like to reclaim them for their original, life-giving purpose?
God of truth, restore the words we have corrupted. Help us speak with honesty that builds rather than destroys, and give us ears to recognize when language becomes weaponized. Amen.
