What Must I Do?
Acts 16:29-31 · Fresh Start: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
The jailer called for some lights, rushed in, and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He led them outside and asked, “Honorable masters, what must I do to be rescued?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved — you and your entire household.” — Acts 16:29-31 (CEB)
The jailer asks the only question that matters: “What must I do to be rescued?” Not “How do I fix this?” Not “How do I save my career?” He uses the word rescued — the language of someone who knows he’s drowning and can’t swim. A moment ago he was reaching for his sword. Now he’s on his knees, asking the prisoners for help. The earthquake shook more than the foundations of the prison. It shook the foundations of everything the jailer believed about power, control, and who holds the keys. Paul’s answer is devastatingly simple: “Believe in the Lord Jesus.” Not a program. Not a checklist. Not a theological exam. Believe. Trust the one who stayed when the doors flew open. Trust the one who shouted to save you when you were about to destroy yourself.
Tomorrow we gather to explore this story together — how midnight becomes morning, how chains become freedom, how a jailer becomes a host. Join us at 8:30 a.m. with hymns and organ music, or 10:15 a.m. with our praise team. Online worship is available at mcphersonfirst.org/worship/pages/online-worship.
God who answers the desperate question, give us the jailer’s honesty to ask for rescue and Paul’s simplicity to point toward Jesus. Christ, you are the answer. Holy Spirit, prepare our hearts for worship tomorrow. Amen.
