What Grace Is Doing While You’re Not Looking
John 20:26a · Fresh Start: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
“After eight days his disciples were again in a house and Thomas was with them.” — John 20:26a (CEB)
During those eight days, Thomas thought nothing was happening. He was stuck in doubt while his friends celebrated. The situation felt frozen — everyone else had moved forward and he was still standing in the same place.
But something was happening. Jesus was already planning to return. The encounter Thomas needed was already on its way. Grace was working underneath the silence, preparing a moment Thomas couldn’t see coming.
In our tradition, we call this prevenient grace — the grace that goes before us. It means God is active in your life before you’re aware of it, before you say yes to anything, before you even know to look. The waiting that feels empty is rarely as empty as it seems.
If you’re in an eight-day stretch right now — waiting for clarity, for healing, for direction, for something to break through — consider that grace may already be in motion. You can’t see it yet. Thomas couldn’t either. But Jesus was coming back.
God of prevenient grace, you work in seasons we can’t see. When our waiting feels endless, remind us that you are already on the way. Amen.
