Truth from an Unlikely Messenger
John 19:19 · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“Pilate had a public notice written and posted on the cross. It read ‘Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews.’” — John 19:19 (CEB)
Pilate probably thought the sign was a final insult—a way to mock both Jesus and the Jewish leaders who had forced his hand. But John sees deeper. This sign told the truth: the man on the cross was indeed a king.
Sometimes the truth gets proclaimed by people who have no idea what they are saying. God works through unlikely messengers, even through mockery and injustice. The question for us is whether we recognize the truth when it appears in unexpected places.
God of truth, open our eyes to see your work even in unlikely places. Help us recognize your presence where we least expect it. Through Christ we pray, amen.
