The Wreath
2 Timothy 4:8 (CEB) · Passing the Flame
“At last the champion’s wreath that is awarded for righteousness is waiting for me. The Lord, who is the righteous judge, is going to give it to me on that day. He’s giving it not only to me but also to all those who have set their heart on waiting for his appearance.” – 2 Timothy 4:8 (CEB)
Read Paul’s last line carefully. The wreath is not only for him. It is for all who have set their heart on waiting for Christ’s appearance. The reward is not a narrow prize for spiritual champions. It is for ordinary people whose hearts are set.
Tomorrow is Go and Grow Sunday in worship. Our children and youth will share what this summer has meant for them. Some of them are just starting their journey with Christ. Others have been in church their whole lives. All of them are part of the wreath Paul is talking about, because the reward has always been for anyone whose heart is set on Jesus.
Come to worship tomorrow. Come to see the flame that has been passed to the next generation already catching. Online worship is available at youtube.com/@mcphersonfirst.
What would it look like this week to set your heart on Christ’s appearance as more than a phrase?
God of the wreath, set our hearts on you. Give us eyes to see the flame catching in younger hands, and the joy of knowing the reward is not only ours. Amen.
