“God said to him, “Because you have asked for this instead of requesting long life, wealth, or victory over your enemies—asking for discernment so as to acquire good judgment—” – 1 Kings 3:11 (CEB)
God names what Solomon did not ask for, which tells us the omissions were the point. Not long life. Not wealth. Not victory over enemies.
Those are the three things kings in that world routinely asked their gods for, and they are roughly the three things anyone asks for. Stay alive. Be comfortable. Beat the people who are against me. Solomon skips all three, and God notices out loud.
It is worth running your own list before tomorrow. Not the noble version you would say in a group. The actual one, the requests you have been making quietly for months, the ones you would not read aloud.
Tomorrow is All Saints, when we name the people whose faith carried us here. Come and bring your asking with you. We worship at 8:30 and 10:15, and online worship is available at youtube.com/@mcphersonfirst.
God, you see what I have been asking for. Sort it while I sleep, and bring me to worship tomorrow wanting what you want. Amen.
