The Thing You Sacrifice to Win
John 19:15b · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“‘We have no king except the emperor,’ the chief priests answered.” — John 19:15b (CEB)
This is the most chilling line in the passage. For generations, Israel had proclaimed that God alone was their king. It was their most fundamental confession of faith. Now, to secure one man’s death, they renounced everything they believed.
Violence degrades everyone it touches—not just its victims. The chief priests became less than they were. Their faith became a tool for destruction rather than liberation. We see this pattern when people abandon their own values to win an argument, punish an enemy, or maintain control.
The thing you sacrifice to get what you want has a way of being the thing you needed most. Tomorrow is a new day. What conviction do you need to reclaim before it slips further away?
God of faithfulness, forgive us when we trade our deepest convictions for temporary victories. Anchor us in what matters most, and help us reclaim the beliefs we have released. Amen.
