“The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man and served in his Egyptian master’s household.” – Genesis 39:2 (CEB)
One sentence carries the whole story: “The Lord was with Joseph.” Not “the Lord got Joseph out of Egypt.” Not “the Lord undid what his brothers had done.” The Lord was with him, right there in a foreign house, still a servant, still far from home.
God’s presence didn’t erase Joseph’s circumstances; it accompanied him inside them. This is the quiet claim the passage rests on, and it’s the claim our faith rests on too. God does not promise to keep us out of hard places. God promises not to leave us in them alone. The tether between us and God is not our grip on God; it is God’s grip on us, and it holds even when everything else gives way. Where do you most need to trust that God is with you, not just watching from a distance?
Faithful God, you did not spare Joseph the far country, but you never left it. Hold me the way you held him. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
