The Temptation to Edit the Truth
John 19:21 · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“The Jewish chief priests complained to Pilate, ‘Don’t write, “The king of the Jews,” but, “This man said, I am the king of the Jews.”’” — John 19:21 (CEB)
The chief priests wanted the sign edited. They understood the difference between a claim and a fact. Writing “the king of the Jews” proclaimed a coronation. Writing “he said I am the king” dismissed a pretender.
They wanted the truth softened, qualified, made less direct. We face the same temptation—to edit the message until it offends no one and changes nothing. But sometimes the truth just needs to be stated clearly.
God of courage, forgive us when we soften truth for comfort’s sake. Give us words that are both gracious and honest. Through Christ we pray, Amen.
