The Loneliness of Obedience
John 19:17 · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“So they took Jesus, and carrying his cross by himself, he went out to the place called Skull Place (in Aramaic, Golgotha).” — John 19:17 (CEB)
Jesus carried his own cross through the streets of Jerusalem. No one stepped forward. The crowds that had shouted hosanna days earlier now watched in silence.
There is a loneliness to obedience that most of us would rather avoid. Yet Jesus walked this road willingly—not because the burden was light, but because the destination mattered more than the pain. Sometimes faithfulness means carrying what no one else will touch, trusting that the road leads somewhere even when the crowd has gone quiet.
God of the difficult road, give us courage to carry what you place before us. When the crowd falls silent, remind us that you walk beside us. Through Christ we pray, amen.
