The Hole in the Ground
Matthew 25:18 (CEB) · The Gospel on Stage and Screen
“But the servant who had received the one valuable coin dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money.” — Matthew 25:18 (CEB)
Burying the coin wasn’t reckless. It was careful. Deliberate, even. The servant protected what he’d been given, wrapped it up, dug a hole, placed it safely underground where nothing could touch it.
In a Kansas garden, tulip bulbs go into the ground in fall and look like nothing all winter, buried, hidden, dormant. But those bulbs are doing something the servant’s coin never did: preparing for life on the other side of the dark season.
The difference between a buried coin and a buried bulb is intention. One hides out of fear. The other trusts that being planted in the dark is part of the process.
Where have you mistaken caution for faithfulness? What gift sits safely wrapped, untouched, waiting for a courage you think hasn’t arrived yet?
God, show us the difference between wise caution and fearful hiding. Where we have buried what you gave us, give us courage to dig it up and plant it in soil that grows. Amen.
