The Freedom of Simply Testifying
John 18:37 · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“I was born and came into the world for this reason: to testify to the truth. Whoever accepts the truth listens to my voice.” — John 18:37 (CEB)
Jesus names his purpose with remarkable clarity: to testify to the truth. Not to debate it, defend it, or force it on anyone—simply to testify.
There’s freedom in that distinction. When we feel responsible for making people accept the truth, we carry a weight that isn’t ours. When we simply testify—speaking what we know, living what we believe—we can release the outcome. A friend won’t listen? Testify and let it be. A system won’t change overnight? Testify and keep showing up. The truth doesn’t need our protection. It needs our faithful voice.
Today, consider honestly: where has the pressure to convince kept you from simply speaking what’s true? Sometimes the most faithful thing is to say it plainly and leave space for God to work.
God who is truth, free us from the burden of convincing and give us the courage to simply testify. Help us trust your truth to do its own work. Amen.
