The Earth Produces Crops All by Itself
Mark 4:28a (CEB) · Tending the Soul: Growing in Grace Through Three Questions
“The earth produces crops all by itself.” — Mark 4:28a (CEB)
The Greek word here is automate, by itself. The earth does the growing. Not the farmer. Not the seed. The soil itself carries a power that produces life without anyone engineering it.
This is Jesus’ quiet insistence that God does the heavy lifting in spiritual formation. We scatter. We sleep. We wake. We show up. But the actual growing? That’s God’s work in God’s soil.
We exhaust ourselves trying to manufacture transformation, the right program, the right discipline, the right emotional experience. But the parable suggests our job is simpler and humbler than that. Our job is to stay in the soil. To remain planted. To keep showing up for the ordinary rhythms of faith. The transformation itself comes from a source deeper than our effort.
Tomorrow we continue the Tending the Soul series, exploring how to notice God’s growth in our lives. Worship is at 8:30 AM with hymns and organ, or 10:15 AM with our praise team. Online worship is available at youtube.com/@mcphersonfirst. It’s also Communion Sunday. Come to the table and receive what only God can give. Vacation Bible School Kingdom Quest kicks off Sunday at 11:30 AM with lunch.
God who grows what we cannot manufacture, thank you that transformation is your work, not ours. Keep us planted in your soil and faithful in the ordinary rhythms. Amen.
