The Difference Between Winning and Faithfulness
John 18:36 · Witnesses: Encountering Jesus When It Matters Most
“My kingdom doesn’t originate from this world. If it did, my guards would fight so that I wouldn’t have been arrested by the Jewish leaders. My kingdom isn’t from here.” — John 18:36 (CEB)
You’ve heard the phrase “pick your battles.” We use it to justify the fights we avoid. But Jesus describes a kingdom that doesn’t fight the way earthly powers fight—not because it’s weak, but because its strength comes from somewhere else entirely. The values, the methods, the source are all different.
That changes the question for us. Instead of asking “Is this worth fighting for?” we might ask “What kind of power am I using?”
Today, notice the difference between moments when you’re trying to win and moments when you’re trying to be faithful. They feel different in your body, they produce different outcomes, and they shape the kind of person you’re becoming. Pay attention to which one is driving you right now.
God, teach us the difference between winning and faithfulness. When we reach for the world’s tools of control and coercion, redirect our hands toward yours. Amen.
