“Do not desire and try to take your neighbor’s house ... or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.” – Exodus 20:17 (CEB)
Notice that the commandment keeps saying “your neighbor’s.” Coveting is almost always comparison. We were doing fine with our own home, our own job, our own life, until we measured it against someone else’s. The neighbor’s house looked bigger. The neighbor’s vacation looked better. And suddenly what was enough an hour ago feels like not enough.
We carry a thousand neighbors in our pockets now. Every time we scroll, we are handed someone’s highlight reel and invited to measure our ordinary Tuesday against it. No wonder we feel behind. Comparison is the thief that slips in and steals contentment we already had. Today, when you catch yourself measuring your life against someone else’s, name it for what it is, and gently look back at what is actually yours.
God, free me from the trap of comparison. Let me stop measuring my life against everyone else’s, and receive the one you have given me with gratitude. Through Christ I pray. Amen.
