“As Pharaoh drew closer, the Israelites looked back and saw the Egyptians marching toward them. The Israelites were terrified and cried out to the Lord.” – Exodus 14:10 (CEB)
Exodus puts two things in one sentence. They were terrified, and they cried out to the Lord. Not one and then the other, once they had settled down. The fear and the prayer arrive together, in the same breath.
We often assume prayer asks for composure first. That we should steady ourselves, find better words, and bring God something presentable. This verse does not work that way. The crying out is not what happens after faith comes back. The crying out is the faith. It is what faith sounds like when it is frightened.
So bring it as it is. Shaky, unedited, in the middle of the panic. God is not waiting on a calmer version of you to show up first.
What would it look like to bring the fear straight to God, unedited?
God, I do not always have calm words. Take the shaky ones. Meet me in the middle of the fear instead of after it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Love this! How often we forget God when lost, scared or even terrified? Thanks Andrew.
