“But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand your ground, and watch the Lord rescue you today.”” – Exodus 14:13 (CEB)
Moses gives them something to do, and it is not what anyone expects, least of all them. Stand your ground. Not run. Not fight. Not fix. Stand.
We hear standing still as doing nothing. The text hears it differently. With an army closing in, holding your position is among the hardest things a body can do. It costs more than running would. Standing your ground is not the absence of action. It is action that refuses panic.
Then comes the second half, which is the whole point. Watch the Lord rescue you. The standing is not the rescue. The standing is how you end up positioned to see it. Run, and you miss the one thing you most needed to witness.
Where is holding steady the faithful move for you right now?
God, teach me the difference between doing nothing and standing still. When everything says run, hold my feet. Let me watch for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
