Someone Scatters Seed on the Ground
Mark 4:26 (CEB) · Tending the Soul: Growing in Grace Through Three Questions
“Then Jesus said, ‘This is what God’s kingdom is like. It’s as though someone scatters seed on the ground.’” — Mark 4:26 (CEB)
Jesus begins the parable with the most ordinary act imaginable. Someone scatters seed. No fanfare. No technique. No perfectly tilled rows or calculated spacing. Just a handful of seed tossed into the dirt.
The kingdom of God starts with scattering. Not with mastery, not with a strategic plan, not with guaranteed results. With an open hand releasing something small into soil you can’t fully control.
We scatter seed every day without realizing it. The conversation where you said something honest. The prayer you offered for someone who’ll never know about it. The moment you showed up when it would have been easier to stay home. None of these felt monumental at the time. That’s the point. The farmer in this parable isn’t celebrated for brilliance. He’s celebrated for doing the simplest possible thing, letting go of the seed.
What would it look like to scatter generously today, a kind word, an honest prayer, a small act of faithfulness, and trust the soil to do its work?
God of scattered seed, give us open hands today. Help us release small acts of faithfulness into your soil without needing to control what grows. Amen.
