“So now, if you faithfully obey me and stay true to my covenant, you will be my most precious possession out of all the peoples, since the whole earth belongs to me.” – Exodus 19:5 (CEB)
Two small words carry the whole covenant. So now. God has just finished reciting the rescue, and then comes the turn. The ask is real, and the terms genuinely matter; nobody should soften that. But look where the ask sits. It is second. It arrives after the carrying rather than before it, and that changes what kind of ask it is. An obligation that comes first is a price. An obligation that comes second is a response. The words can be identical and the two are not the same transaction. Nothing God asks of you today is an invoice for something you have already been handed.
Where have you been treating a response to grace as a payment for it?
God, you gave before you asked. Keep me from turning your grace into a debt I am trying to settle. Through Christ, Amen.
