“Do not desire and try to take your neighbor’s house.” – Exodus 20:17 (CEB)
The Bible tells one story about wanting, over and over. In the garden, the fruit looked good, the desire grew, and the hand reached out. See, desire, take. A man named Achan saw treasure he wasn’t to touch, wanted it, and took it. A king named Ahab saw his neighbor’s vineyard, couldn’t stop wanting it, and took it, ruining a life to get it.
The tenth commandment names that pattern and stops it at the source. Notice it runs see, then desire, then take. By the time it reaches your hand, it is almost too late. The place to interrupt it is earlier, at the desire, before the wanting hardens into action. That is why God goes after the heart. Guard what you let yourself dwell on, because today’s quiet desire is tomorrow’s decision.
God, you know how quickly wanting becomes taking in me. Meet me at the source. Guard my heart before my hands ever move. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
