Poured Out

2 Timothy 4:6-7 (CEB) · Passing the Flame

“I’m already being poured out like a sacrifice to God, and the time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:6-7 (CEB)

Paul writes his own closing line. Three past-tense verbs. Fought. Finished. Kept. No regret. No self-pity. A sober accounting of a life that went where God sent it.

Paul uses a sacrifice image. “Poured out.” It reaches back to the Temple practice of pouring wine or oil as an offering to God. His life is the offering. He is not the one keeping it. God is.

Notice the quiet at the center of this verse. Paul is in prison, likely days from execution, and he is not afraid. He has nothing to prove. He has been the worker God sent him to be. The flame is low, but it is not out. It is being poured.

What would you want the closing line of your own life to be, and how close is today’s living to that line?

God who receives our offering, teach us to live poured out, not hoarded. Let our fighting be for good things. Let our race be finished when you say it is. Let our faith be kept. Amen.
