Permission to Start Small
Matthew 25:27 (CEB) · The Gospel on Stage and Screen
“In that case, you should have turned my money over to the bankers so that when I returned, you could give me what belonged to me with interest.” — Matthew 25:27 (CEB)
The bankers. That’s the master’s floor, the absolute minimum. Not a bold venture, not a risky investment, just a deposit. Boring. Safe. Barely trying. And the master would have accepted it.
This changes everything about the parable. God isn’t demanding extraordinary results from ordinary people. God is asking for any engagement at all. The harshest words in this story aren’t reserved for people who tried and failed. They’re reserved for the one who never tried.
If the big step feels impossible right now, take the small one. Pray for one minute instead of thirty. Send one encouraging text instead of organizing the whole meal train. Show up even when you don’t feel ready.
Start somewhere. Anywhere. God will meet you there.
God, we hear your invitation to begin, not perfectly, not boldly, just faithfully. Give us permission to start small today, trusting that you meet our effort with your grace. Amen.
