Partners in the Gospel
Philippians 1:5 · Fresh Start: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
“I’m glad because of the way you have been my partners in the ministry of the gospel from the time you first believed it until now.” — Philippians 1:5 (CEB)
Paul doesn’t call the Philippians his audience or his converts. He calls them partners. The Greek word is koinonia: shared life, shared risk, shared work. From the beginning they didn’t just listen to Paul’s preaching. They funded it, traveled with him, defended him when he was in trouble, and carried the gospel when he couldn’t.
Partnership changes the math. A speaker reaches whoever shows up. Partners reach everyone they know. The Philippian church multiplied Paul’s ministry because they refused to stay on the receiving end.
Faith gets flattened when it becomes a performance we watch. Partnership invites a different posture. You have something to contribute, something only you can offer. The gospel moves forward through ordinary people who sign on as coworkers rather than spectators.
God of shared life and calling, thank you for inviting us into partnership. Christ, you made disciples into co-laborers. Holy Spirit, show us where our contribution belongs. Amen.
