Not Chained

“This is the reason I’m suffering to the point that I’m in prison like a common criminal. But God’s word cannot be imprisoned.” — 2 Timothy 2:9 (CEB)

The sentence hinges on one word: “but.” Paul is chained. The word is not. The messenger is limited. The message is not.

The letter itself proves Paul’s point. Paul cannot travel, but the letter travels for him. Paul cannot preach in public, but his words reach a church he will never again see in person. Every time his letter was read aloud in a gathered congregation, the word slipped past the guards without having to ask permission.

You have probably felt chained at some point. By grief. By a diagnosis. By a job you cannot seem to leave. By the limits of a body that used to do more. Paul’s word stands up for you here. Your circumstances are not the outer edge of what God can do through you.
