This week’s belief: The church is Christ’s body, sent into the world
“Naaman’s servants came up to him and spoke to him: “Our father, if the prophet had told you to do something difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? All he said to you was, ‘Wash and become clean.’”” – 2 Kings 5:13 (CEB)
The second group of people without names saves the story, and they do it by naming the actual problem.
If he had asked you to do something difficult, you would have done it. That is the whole diagnosis. The instruction was not too hard. It was too small. Naaman came prepared to pay, to travel, to endure something demanding, because that is how a great man addresses a problem. He was not prepared to simply do a modest thing he had been told to do.
Many of us are the same. We will accept a costly answer more easily than a simple one, because a costly answer leaves us something to be proud of.
Tomorrow we worship together. The servants’ small job belongs to us too: ask someone to come along, and make it easy when they say yes. Come and see what is offered freely. We worship at 8:30 and 10:15, and online worship is available at youtube.com/@mcphersonfirst.
God, when your answer is small and I want it to be grand, give me the humility to just do it. Ready me for worship tomorrow. Amen.
