Grab Hold
1 Timothy 6:12 (CEB) · Passing the Flame
“Compete in the good fight of faith. Grab hold of eternal life—you were called to it, and you made a good confession of it in the presence of many witnesses.” — 1 Timothy 6:12 (CEB)
Paul uses the language of wrestling or running in a race. “Grab hold.” The image isn’t polite. It’s a fighter’s grip, the hand that won’t let go when everything in the body wants to.
But listen to what Paul says Timothy is grabbing hold of. Eternal life. And watch the order. Paul doesn’t say earn it. He says: “you were called to it.” Eternal life is not a prize we grab from a shelf we built. It’s a gift God already extended, and the grab is a response.
The fight of faith isn’t climbing toward something God withholds. It’s holding on to something God has already given, when the pressures of the day try to loosen our grip.
What has God placed in your hands that you are being tempted to let go of this week?
Hold us, God, as we hold on to you. When our grip loosens, tighten your grace around us and return us to the life you already give. Amen.
