A note: This is the manuscript I preached at the 10:15 AM service. Pastor Chantel Makarawa, our Associate Pastor, preached her own message at the 8:30 AM service on the same scripture.

“God opened the sea. Nobody carried them. They walked.”

This is Five Promises, week four of five, on Exodus 14, preached on World Communion Sunday. Israel has walked out of slavery and stands at the edge of the sea with Pharaoh’s chariots behind them, and the first thing they ask for is to go back. The promise this week is service, the one of the five that moves your feet.

In the manuscript below:

  • A graveside one pallbearer short, and what it says about who does the carrying.

  • Why Moses tells the people to keep still, and why a few verses later they have to walk into the water anyway.

  • An old rabbinic story about the angels singing at the sea, and why God stopped them.

  • Where the sea is in McPherson, and three small places to put your feet this week.
