First the Stalk, Then the Head, Then the Full Head of Grain
Mark 4:28b (CEB) · Tending the Soul: Growing in Grace Through Three Questions
“The earth produces crops all by itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full head of grain.” — Mark 4:28 (CEB)
First the stalk. Then the head. Then the full head of grain. Jesus names three stages, and every one of them matters.
The stalk isn’t a failed head of grain. It’s exactly what’s supposed to come first. But we don’t always see it that way. We compare our stalk to someone else’s harvest and feel behind. We look at the early, fragile growth in our lives, the first attempts at prayer, the awkward conversations about faith, the shaky steps toward a new habit, and dismiss them as not enough.
Jesus says otherwise. The stalk is the kingdom at work. It’s not a lesser version of the harvest. It’s the necessary stage that makes the harvest possible. Without the stalk, there is no head. Without the head, there is no full grain.
Where are you in the progression? Maybe you’re in a stalk season, something new and fragile just breaking the surface. Or maybe you’re in the head stage, growth is visible but the fullness hasn’t arrived. Name where you are. And trust that the next stage is already forming inside this one.
God of every season, help us honor the stage we’re in. When growth feels small, remind us that the stalk is just as real as the harvest. Amen.
