“Remember the Sabbath day and treat it as holy. Six days you may work and do all your tasks, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. Do not do any work on it—not you, your sons or daughters, your male or female servants, your animals, or the immigrant who is living with you.” – Exodus 20:8-10 (CEB)
The Sabbath command does not stop with you. Read the list. God legislates rest for the people least able to claim it on their own. Somebody who works for you cannot declare their own day off, so God declares it for them. Generosity is written into the law that early, and here it looks like handing over something you had every legal right to take.

Tomorrow we close Five Promises with the promise of gifts, and with the sentence at Sinai that puts the giving in the right order. Come and be part of it. We worship at 8:30 and 10:15, and there is room for you.
God, you built rest for everybody into your own law. Make me generous with what I have the power to withhold. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
