Even When We're Not

“’If we are disloyal, he stays faithful’ because he can’t be anything else than what he is.” — 2 Timothy 2:13 (CEB)
This is the line most of us need when we come to worship. Paul closes the little hymn with a sentence that refuses to make the relationship conditional. If we are disloyal, God stays faithful. It is not who we are. It is who God is.
Some weeks your grip is strong. Some weeks your grip slips. Some weeks you forget. The verse does not ask you to perform grip. It names the one whose grip never loosens.
Tomorrow morning, we gather for Holy Communion. The invitation is not for people who have kept the flame perfectly. It is for people who need what the table offers: a faithful God meeting us with grace that does not depend on our good weeks. Come tired. Come sure. Come unsure. The table is set. Faithful God, we come tomorrow not because our grip is strong but because yours is. Meet us at the table with the grace we cannot produce on our own. Amen.
