“The good news is that God has already declared you enough.”

This is where The Good Life lands, week four of four in the Ten Commandments. Preached September 6, 2026, on Exodus 20:17, on a Communion Sunday over Labor Day weekend. The last commandment is the only one that reaches past the hands and into the wanting. The sermon opens with a genuinely good day lost in about four seconds, and asks what has actually happened when nothing about a life has changed except the comparison.

In the manuscript below:

  • The answer researchers keep getting when they ask people how much would finally be enough, and why it holds up and down the scale.

  • How one Hebrew word behind “covet” runs from a garden to a field of plunder to a plot of ground where a man dies over a vineyard.

  • What Bible Project says we are actually reaching for when we want a neighbor’s things, and why getting them never settles it.

  • Why an open hand cannot covet, and three ordinary practices that train one.
