Christ Is Proclaimed
Philippians 1:18 · Fresh Start: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
“What do I think about this? Just this: since Christ is proclaimed in every possible way, whether from dishonest or true motives, I’m glad and I’ll continue to be glad.” — Philippians 1:18 (CEB)
Some people were preaching Christ out of jealousy, trying to make Paul’s imprisonment harder. And Paul’s response? “I’m glad.”
Not because motives don’t matter. They do. But because Paul has arrived at a place of radical trust. The good work God started isn’t dependent on perfect people or pure intentions. Christ is proclaimed in every possible way: through flawed messengers, through mixed motives, through circumstances nobody would choose. God’s purposes are bigger than our ability to mess them up.
That’s not permission to stop caring about integrity. It’s an invitation to stop carrying the weight of the whole enterprise on your shoulders. The work belongs to God, and God will complete it.
Paul’s gladness in prison is the fruit of trust. If Christ is being proclaimed, the mission is succeeding. That’s worth gladness, even when everything else looks like loss.
God who proclaims Christ in every possible way, free us from thinking it all depends on us. Christ, you are proclaimed through our imperfection. Holy Spirit, give us Paul’s gladness. Amen.
