“You saw what I did to the Egyptians, and how I lifted you up on eagles’ wings and brought you to me.” – Exodus 19:4 (CEB)
Before God asks Israel for anything at Sinai, God tells them what happened. “You saw what I did.” Not what I will do if you cooperate. What I did, already, while you watched. They stand at that mountain as people who were carried there. The image is a bird lifting its young clear of danger, and that is not a picture of partnership. Nobody flies alongside an eagle. You are carried or you are not. So whatever Israel is about to be asked, they are asked as people who have already been rescued at somebody else’s expense. That order is not a detail in the story. It is the story.
What has God already done for you that you keep forgetting to count?
God, before I do anything today, remind me what you have already done. Let my gratitude come first. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
