“You’re not the first to carry this faith. You’re the most recent.”

This is week two of Passing the Flame, four weeks in Paul’s letters to a young pastor named Timothy. Preached July 26, 2026, on 2 Timothy 1:1-14, it sits with something most of us carry without ever thanking anyone for it. Writing from prison near the end of his life, Paul names the two women who lived faith in front of Timothy first, his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, and he tells Timothy to rekindle a gift that is already there.

In the manuscript below:

  • Why two photographs surfacing during an ordination service became a picture of standing in the middle of a stream.

  • What the word “rekindle” actually pictures, and why it means you don’t have to manufacture a fire you don’t feel.

  • How a spirit of power, love, and self-control holds together, and what goes wrong when any one of the three stands alone.

  • The card in the bulletin, and the single name it asks you to carry home and pray this week.
